Eight productions of excellence, three of them by great Puerto Rican artists, won the International Prize of Cubadisco (Cuba’s annual record fair and contest) this year, with which the important musical event acknowledges outstanding cultural contributions in the record industry.

Reafirmación, by cuatro (four-string guitar) performer Edwin Colón Zayas, produced by himself; Arroz Con Habichuela, by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico (Sony BMG); and El Godfather de La Salsa, by Andy Montañez (La Calle Records) were the awarded pieces to the Puerto Rican musicians. Cubadisco, to be held in Havana from May 16-24, is dedicated this edition to the neighboring island.

The jury of renowned musicians, critics, communicators and promoters also granted the international prize to The Journey & The Labyrinth: The Music of John Dowland, in which Sting along with Bosnian lute player Edin Karamazov do a version of pieces by the British composer of Elizabethan times, John Dowland (Deutsche Grammophon). Seguire Caminando, by the Spanish group Amparanoia (Universal Vale Music) and the CD-Book Un restaurador de sueños, Víctor Rodríguez (Teide Music), from the Canary Islands, were also awarded.

The main theme of Cubadisco 2009 is the relation between music and children
