Michalis Terzis, one of the foremost composers of contemporary Greek music, has a new CD titled Best Greek Songs (ARC Music EUCD2170, 2008). The CD features some of today’s most famous Greek singers. There are two brand new compositions featuring vocals by Glykeria, as well as some of Michalis Terzis’ most beautiful songs sung by George Dalaras, Dimitra Galani, Anna Vissi, and a new up-and-coming singer on the Greek music scene named Niki Valsami.
“In this album the music of the whole world meets and coexists within the deep spirit and the colours of Greek music, played by my orchestra and performed so beautifully by the singers," says Michalis Terzis.
Michalis Terzis’ is one of the foremost composers of contemporary Greek music. His career started in 1973 playing music by famous Greek composers such as Mikis Theodorakis (whom Terzis has cited as a major influence) and Manos Katzidakis, as well as his own compositions, at music theatres in the historical part of Athens beneath the Acropolis.
He was introduced to a greater audience at a concert in Panathinaiko Stadium by Mikis Theodorakis, who presented him as “one of Greece’s most important and prolific composers”. Terzis recorded his first piece, “Hymn for Cyprus”, in 1976 and has been steadily adding to his repertoire ever since, composing epic songs, traditional elegies, music for theatre as well as TV and film scores.
