New York (N.Y.), USA – The New York Haitian music and entertainment industry (NYHMI) is coming together to raise funds for the victims of Haiti who have been recently devastated by hurricanes. "There is no word to describe the disaster caused to a country already so impoverished. Flooding and landslides have cut off land routes and hampered humanitarian access. We can’t stay blind to this gut-wrenching situation where thousands have been left without shelter, food, drinking water and with so many lives lost." Haiti SOS Benefit Concert will be held on Sunday Sept 21, 2008 at Amazura, Jamaica, NY from 3:00 PM to 4:00 AM.
This unfortunate circumstance is provoking a humanitarian crisis of enormous proportion. The possibility for total famine and epidemic outbreaks in the month to come might result from this devastating disaster. Many Haitian artists and professionals of the HMI have been galvanized, and they are uniting in a collaborative effort to raise money for the victims of this tragedy.
The artists scheduled to appear at the Haiti SOS Benefit Concert are: Zin, Kino and Phantoms, Carimi, Nu look, Do-la, Ti Bob de Nazareth, So Fresh, Tempo, System Band, Shoubou from Tabou Combo, Emeline Michel, Nadia Dieudonne & Feet of Rhythm, Kontwol la, and Mikerline dance group, Obed Jean Louis, Cubano of Skah Shah, Chardovoine, Dadi Beaubrun and Lataye, Tokay, Bigga Haitian, Markus Schwartz, Seca Konza, Ipnotik Groove, Kontwol La, Zouti, Bizi, Cruise Kontwol, Les Freres Polycap, les Freres Desronettes, Haitian Mass Choir, Les Freres Benedicte, Felina Baker, 1st Klass, Raram, Omega, Bouyou Amboise, Doudou Chancy, Negmawon, Mr. Reo and more.
United Nations estimates nearly 800,000 people have been left destitute, close to 330 people killed by the storms, and some 80,000 people remain in temporary shelters in and around Gonaives, the most affected city in Haiti. The NYHMI is hoping to help the people of Haiti in their present and pressing time of need and suffering. All proceeds will go to UNICEF and will be handled at the door by an independent fiscal conduit organization. At the Haiti SOS Benefit Concert canned goods, can openers, bottled water, instant cereals, salt crackers, matches, garbage bags, infant food, hygiene products (tooth brushes, tooth paste, soaps, toilette paper, deodorant, female necessities, diapers for children etc), emergency kit and clothing will be collected.
The suggested minimum donation is $30. Please support Haiti in its time of need.
