17° Festival Musicale del Mediterraneo Brings World Music to Genoa

The 17° Festival Musicale del Mediterraneo is taking place in Genoa (Genova), Italy, from 1st to 6th July. This year’s edition is called “Play Listen Look” (“Suoni Senti Vedi”). The six day event is a celebration of different cultures and artistic expressions coming from all over the world, with particular attention to the relationship between traditional and contemporary sounds.

The current edition of the festival looks at music and images: artists play while videos and pictures are displayed in the background. An innovative project which explores visual art, technology and filmed languages. It’s a travel through foreign countries, observing populations, habits and cultural changes: meetings, concerts and films give birth to an artistic melting pot with performers coming from Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

The rhythm of flamenco animates “Carmen”, a show by Spain’s Juan Polvillo & Alma Flamenca based on the 1915 movie by C.B.De Mille; percussion, dance and images from India create the Bollywood atmosphere; the rest is completed by the digital sounds of the American group Tuxedo Moon, the energy of African music and the softer mood of the Japanese traditions, with butoh dance, taiko drummers and a string quartet on a festival production in the honor of Akira Kurosawa. As a special conclusion, the event dedicated to the young public of the festival with documentaries, musical animation and workshops for kids and the final night dedicated to some local group, such as Banda di Caricamento, Gruppo Spontaneo Trallallero and Cluster.

The Festival takes place in the Piazza delle Feste of the port area in Genoa, which has always been a crossing site for arrivals and departures of foreign citizens.
