Navelgas, Spain – A fascinating combination of world music and gold mining will take place this summer in the small Asturian valley of Navelgas (Tinéo) in northern Spain. The July 27-29 weekend is known as "Gold and Folk" and it includes Spain’s most reputable folk music contest, “Cuartu Los Valles”, and the Spanish Championship of Gold Diggers.
This charming valley has barely 200 inhabitants and it includes the Museo del Oro de Asturias (Asturias Gold Museum), the Museo Vaqueiro de Asturias (Asturias Cowboy Museum) and the Museo del Bosque (Forest Museum), all within a 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) radius. In addition, there are hiking trails, such as "Brezo"; horse riding trails, and more.
The Museo del Oro provides gold digging equipment for rental (pans, bars, boots, pick axes, etc.) so that anyone with an adventurous spirit can look for gold in the river Esva. There are also gold digging instructors and guided tours available to vist the Roman mine ruins at Navelgas.
