Janette Carter, the last living offspring of the original Carter
Family (she was daughter of A.E and Sara), passed away on January 22 at the age
of 82. A significant artist in her own right, in recent years she had dedicated
herself to preserving the musical traditions of her family and their region in
south-west Virginia by hosting weekly performances and gatherings at the Carter
Fold in Hiltons, Virginia.
She was the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious National
Heritage Award. International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) recognized her
pioneering influence with the Distinguished Achievement Award in 2002.
