New York City (New York), USA – A day after reporting the closing of the landmark world music club Satalla, World Music Central is happy to report that a new world music label has opened its doors in New York City.
Chonta Records is a a new record label based in New York City dedicated to the new scene of Colombian bands, both in Colombia and in New York, experimenting with new sounds while at the same time paying homage to the legendary Colombian musicians of the past. “We’re calling this the “Nueva Colombia” movement, and we’re doing everything we can to get this sound out to lots of people. It’s a music with the beauty and complexity of the Cuban masters and the euphoric energy of the Brazilian
funksters.”
The label’s first release is Baile/Dance! by Folklore Urbano, a New York collective of some of Colombia’s best folkloric talents and New York’s
finest jazz musicians. Their surprisingly catchy, surprisingly clever tunes have
been filling clubs like S.O.B.’s, where they held their record release party
last month.
