¡Globalquerque! New Mexico’s annual celebration of global music and culture will take place on September 19 and 20, 2014 at the striking National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) along the banks of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, NM. 2014.

Confirmed acts (as of August 14) include renowned Cuban big-band Afro-Cuban All Stars led by Juan de Marcos, one of the founding members of the Buena Vista Social Club; France’s unclassifiable band Lo’Jo; Latin Grammy “Best New Artist” Gaby Moreno (Guatemala); Hungarian string masters Söndörgo; Trinidadian calypso and soca icon Calypso Rose; award-winning Texas conjunto act Los Texmaniacs; young Malian guitarist Oumar Konaté; Colombian vallenato and cumbia maestro Beto Jamaica; American Indian flute player Robert “Tree” Cody and Native Wisdom Dance Theatre (Maricopa/Inter-Tribal), and the music of Chinese pipa virtuoso Liu Fang.

The concerts take place at three stages – the Fountain Courtyard, the large Plaza Mayor and the Journal Theatre. In addition to the evening performances, each year ¡Globalquerque! presents the popular Free Daytime Global Fiesta on Saturday. Activities include family-focused workshops with visiting performers, talks and presentations, international dance lessons, film, the ¡GlobalCOOKIE! decorating contest, Planet Music (a musical instrument “petting zoo”), instrument building for children of all ages and other hands-on cultural craft making.

This year ¡Globalquerque! is expanding its partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center to present the month-long International Cinema Series featuring six films from around the globe spanning all genres including music, documentary, comedy and drama. Four films will be presented for free each Thursday in September in the Bank of America Theatre at the NHCC, with two films screening during the festival’s Free Daytime Global Fiesta on Saturday September 20 in the Wells Fargo Theatre. Films include A Thousand Voices (New Mexico, USA), Alamar (México), The Piano In A Factory(China), Seen But Not Heard (USA), We Are Together (South Africa) and The Wind Journeys (Colombia).
