The Republic of Belarus, formerly a part of the Soviet Union, is surrounded by Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

Covered largely by forests and lakes, it is rich in wildlife and crisscrossed by major rivers such as the Dnieper. Belarus can trace its origins back to when it was a district in the Kiev region of Russia in the late 9th century.
