South African musicians Msaki (Asanda Lusaseni Mvana) and Tubatsi have teamed up to release a new collaborative project. Msaki is a double-winner at this year’s South African Music Awards. She previously collaborated with Black Coffee, Diplo and others. Meanwhile, Tubatsi Mpho Moloi is a member of both the Coldcut/Ninja Tune project Keleketla!, and breakout Soweto band Urban Village.
Msaki x Tubatsi’s debut single ‘Subaleka‘ was released today with an accompanying video shot by up-and-coming South African director Sanaa, who captured on his iPhone the everyday South African experience in Johannesburg and its Townships with candor and warmth.
The debut album, ‘Synthetic Hearts’, is set for release in March 2023 through Parisian label Nø Førmat! The record also features French cellist Clément Petit. The 3 artists originally encountered each other when Msaki & Petit guested on Urban Village’s critically acclaimed 2021 debut ‘Udondolo,’which examined both the contemporary experience of black South Africans and the horrors of Apartheid.
