The tenth edition of the Suma Flamenca (Flamenco Summit) Festival in Madrid comes to a conclusion this week with a program consisting of five dance shows, three cante (vocal) performances, five guitar concerts, and two shows that combine voice and guitar.
The Teatro de La Abadía will hosts the majority of the events. Other venues include the Centro Cultural Paco Rabal, the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Fernán Gómez Theater. Madrid’s thriving tablaos (flamenco nighclubs) will also present 104 performances .
Performances begin on Tuesday June 23 at 21:00 at the Juan Cruz Hall in Teatro de La Abadía with a unique concert that will showcase two artists with the cooperation of the Embassy of Israel. Soprano Sivan Rotem and guitarist Baldi Olier will perform a mix of Ladino and Hebrew songs as well as virtuoso flamenco pieces in a show called Classic Flamenco.
Celebrated guitarist Rafael Riqueni returns to Madrid to present his first concert in many years. He will include a selection of pieces from his entire discography, as well as new compositions that will be part of his upcoming album. The reunion with his fans will be in Juan Cruz Hall in Teatro de La Abadía Wednesday June 24th at 21:00.
On Thursday, June 25th, the Teatro de La Abadía hosts a double bill of flamenco guitar and song. The first act is a show called Picassares by Estepona (Malaga) guitarist Daniel Casares. Iconic painter Pablo Picasso was born and grew up in Malaga. Daniel Casares has created a show with his personal interpretation of Picasso’s life.
Una copla por recuerdo is the second concert, featuring Madrid flamenco singer Paco del Pozo highlighting the close relationship that existed and still exists between copla (poetic song) and flamenco.
