Fundación SGAE Announces 8 Finalists for the 2nd Premio SGAE de Flamenco Paco de Lucía

The Fundación SGAE, in collaboration with the Agencia Andaluza de Instituciones Culturales through the Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco and the Fundación Paco de Lucía, has announced the eight finalists for the second edition of the Premio SGAE de Flamenco Paco de Lucía. The final will take place on Friday, June 7, at 7:30 PM in Sala B of the Teatro Central in Seville (Calle José Gálvez, 6). The eight composer finalists are Víctor Franco, Diego Villegas, Fran Gutiérrez, Mercedes Luján, Álvaro Martinete, Roxana Mouriño, Ramón Porrina, Francisco Roca, and Manuel Valencia.

During the event at Teatro Central, part of the Andalucía – Flamenco series, attendees will experience a variety of flamenco styles. Highlights include tarantas by Manuel Valencia and Mercedes Luján—who participated in FlamencoEñe 2021—dedicating their performances to Paco de Lucía, the namesake of the award. This edition features a strong representation from Cádiz, with four artists from the province: Manuel Valencia from Jerez, Diego Villegas from Sanlúcar, who will perform a duet with guitarist Víctor Franco from Cádiz, and experienced guitarist Fran Gutiérrez from El Tesorillo.

Francisco Roca will pay tribute to his hometown, Huelva, with a fandango, while young guitarist Álvaro Martinete, who recently showcased his jazz skills in the Czech Republic through JazzEñe, will perform a bulería por soleá dedicated to the land of Lorca, where he was born. Additionally, the event will feature performances from outside Andalusia, including Roxana Mouriño from Galicia and master cajón player Ramón Porrina from Madrid.

After all participants have performed, the jury will deliberate and select the winners. The finalists will compete for four main prizes, totaling 11,700 euros: a first prize of 6,000 euros, a second prize of 3,000 euros, a third prize of 1,500 euros, and a fourth prize of 1,200 euros.

The professional jury comprises prestigious composers and musicians Antonio Serrano, José Fernández “Tomatito,” Dorantes, and Lucía Sánchez Varela, representing the Fundación Paco de Lucía. They received additional guidance from the Foundation’s Board, including composer Alejandro Sanz. The jury selected the finalists from 44 submitted scores.

About the Premio SGAE de Flamenco Paco de Lucía

Established in 2021, the Premio SGAE de Flamenco Paco de Lucía is organized by the Fundación SGAE, with the collaboration of the Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco and the Fundación Paco de Lucía, to encourage and recognize the work of flamenco composers. The first edition’s winner was pianist Juan Pérez Rodríguez from Huelva, with his composition “Contrarreloj.”
