Renowned Spanish Flamenco Guitarist and Composer Manolo Sanlúcar Dies at 78

Influential artist Manolo Sanlúcar, one of Spain’s finest guitarists and composers, passed away on August 27, 2022, in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

Manolo Sanlúcar was one of the leading guitarists of his generation, along with Paco de Lucía and Serranito. He was also a highly respected composer who bridged the world of flamenco and classical music.

In 2013 he retired as a performer to focus full time on an audiovisual flamenco encyclopedia.

Víctor Mora Escobar, the mayor of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Manolo’s hometown, decreed three days of official mourning. Flags will fly at half-staff in all official buildings.

Mora tweeted: “Sad day for the world of art, flamenco and our city. We lose an unparalleled Sanluqueño who will go down in history as a great guitar figure, as well as an excellent person and friend.”
