Argentine Folk through Tango Prism

La Típica Folklórica – La Diablera (TAC Faubourg du Monde, 2021)

The masterfully constructed album La Diablera brings together two wonderful musical traditions from Argentina, tango and folk music. La Típica Folklórica is a superb France-based ensemble modeled after classic tango orchestras called orquestas tipicas. Notably, these orchestras include piano, double bass, strings, and bandoneon. However, La Típica Folklórica adds folk music elements such as the bombo drum and flute.

Led by Argentine musician Alfonso Pacin, La Típica Folklórica selected a set of instrumentals and songs for La Diablera, composed by well-known Argentine folk music and tango artists.

La Diablera combines captivating fast-paced songs with dazzling instrumental work along with passionate slow tempo pieces. It is a celebration of rural Argentina, inspired by folk music and dances from the countryside towns and villages, known as ‘el campo’ in Spanish.

The lineup on La Diablera includes director and arranger Alfonso Pacin on violin, guitar, vocals and bombo; Marie-Anne Faupin on bandoneon, flute; Alexandre Peigné on bandoneon; Anne Mazeau on piano; Weronika Rychlik on violin; Elsa Sissia on violin; Caroline Pearsall on violin and viola; and Romain Lécuyer on double bass.

Guests: Milagros Caliva on bandoneón; Ninon Pacin on violin; and Sebastián Quezada on bombo.
