The Little Known Music of the Karaim

Polish multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and researcher Karolina Cicha released Karaimska Mapa Muzyczna (Karaim Music Map) in 2021, issued by The Association of Polish Karaims. The masterfully-crafted album focuses on a little known culture from eastern Europe, the Karaim Jews (also known as Karaites or Krymkaraylar).

Karaim music is primarily inspired by Lithuanian and Crimean musical traditions, with additional Ukrainian, Russian and Polish influences. Karolina Cicha rearranges these old songs and gives them new live by incorporating modern arrangements.

The nicely-packaged set includes two audio discs and a fascinating booklet in Polish that folds out into a map.

Lineup: Karolina Cicha on vocals, accordion, keyboards; Patrycja Betley on percussion; Karolina Matuszkiewicz on kemanche, violin, vocals; Mateusz Szemraj on cymbals, saz, oud, cantelas; and guest appearance by Michał Kuliczenko on vocals.
