Artist Profiles: Miroca Paris

Acclaimed vocalist, percussionist, drummer, and guitarist Ademiro Paris Miranda, better known as Miroca Paris, was born in 1979 in Mindelo, São Vicente island, Cape Verde. He is currently based in Lisbon, Portugal.

Miroca grew up within a family of musicians. At the age of seven, Miroca started playing drums. At 13, he added singing and guitar playing to his musical skills.

In 1994, Miroca he founded his first band in 1994. A year later, Miroca was invited to play with A Batucada, a percussion ensemble in São Vicente.

A key milestone in Miroca’s career was 1998. That year he moved to Portugal. In Lisbon, he played as a drummer or percussionist with various artists, including his famous uncle Tito Paris. A year later, Sara Tavares asked him to join her band.

In 2000, Miroca received an invitation to join Cesária Évora’s ensemble in France. Cesária Évora was the iconic Cape Verdean who had become a world music sensation. For 11 years, Miroca was the percussionist for Cesária, performing live and recording in most of her albums.

Miroca also performed with various well known Cape Verdean and international artists, including fadista Cuca Roseta, Tchecka, Dino D’Santiago, Madonna, and Nancy Veira.

While Miroca Paris is primarily known as a virtuoso percussionist and drummer, on his album D’Alma he returned to playing guitar, like he used to. With his vast rhythmic foundation knowledge, Miroca has developed his own unique guitar playing technique. Together with his live band he premiered the D’Alma Tour 2017 at the iconic WOMAD world music festival.

Since January 2019, Miroca has been working with American pop star Madonna, who’s been living in Lisbon. Miroca
appears in Madonna’s documentary film ‘The World of MadameX’; in her video for ‘Medellin’ featuring Maluma; performed live at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and toured with her for 8 months. Miroca played a wide range of musical instruments, such as congas, Moroccan karkabas and guitar.

In October 2021, Miroca Paris performed at two influential international showcases, EXIB and WOMEX. One month later, he released the EP “Miroca Paris live in Warsaw.”
