Afrika Mamas – Ilanga – The Sun (ARC Music, 2021)

Ilanga (The Sun) is the fifth album from the superb female a cappella ensemble Afrika Mamas, from South Africa. Their style incorporates isicathamiya which combines traditional Zulu a cappella singing and Christian Gospel. It is typically performed by men and was popularized worldwide by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Ilanga – The Sun was co-produced by Xolani Majozi (Ladysmith Black Mambazo) and feature powerful, captivating lead vocals and call and response choruses. The lyrics address themes of love, women’s rights, and respect for the world and its people. The album also features a South African version oif John Lennon’s iconic song “Imagine.” Several of the song were written by the sons of the late Joseph Shabalala, the founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

The current band leader is Ntombifuthi Lushaba. The lineup on this recording includes Ntombifuthi Lushaba on tenor vocals; Patricia Bhe Shandu on alto; Sibongile Nkosi on bass; Sinegugu Khoza on soprano; Zukiswa Majozi on soprano; and Nomvula Dlamini on bass.
