Uday Bhawalkar

Uday Bhawalkar is one of India’s leading performers in the ancient Dhrupad tradition, having studied under the late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar.

Uday Bhawalkar was born in Madhya Pradesh, India, in 1966. His initial training in music started at the age of eight under the guidance of his sister. He also studied in a music school in Ujjain from 1975 to 1981. His training in dhrupad started in 1981 when he received a scholarship to become a student of the renowned Dhrupad vocalist, Ustad Zia Fariuddin Dagar. Later he also received training from the Veena maestro Ustad Zia Mohinuddin Dagar for several years

He has been awarded by National Scholarship and Junior Fellowship from the cultural department of the Government of India.

In 1985 he gave his first performance at Bhopal, and since then he has performed at many prominent music festivals in India and abroad.

Uday Bhawalkar was a visiting faculty at the Conservatorium in Rotterdam for two years and at the World Music School in Amsterdam.
