The WOMEX 2018 Professional Excellence Award Goes to ShoShona Kish

Canadian artist ShoShona Kish will receive the WOMEX 2018 Professional Excellence Award. The award acknowledges her role in the ongoing revolution of upheaving indigenous communities and their culture using the medium of music as an agent of change.

ShoShona Kish is half of the duo that leads the band Digging Roots with her husband, Raven Kanatakta. Their music is a mix of folk-rock, pop, blues, and hip-hop. They have collaborated with Tanya Tagaq and DJ Bear Witness of A Tribe Called Red. Their discography includes Seeds (2006), We Are… (2009) and For the Light (2014).

On confirming her attendance to receive this award at the WOMEX 18, ShoShona Kish disclosed: “I am deeply moved to have this work recognized by WOMEX and in such an important global forum. For me, this award is not about my individual contributions. It is about shining a light on the beauty, relevance and importance of a collective community-led movement. Indigenous music is rising out of the silence and shadows of colonialism and we are reimagining and reclaiming the world through our eyes, through our own voice. It is the voice of resistance and the sound of resilience.”
