WOMEX, the leading international gathering for world music professionals announced today that the 22nd edition will take place October 19-23 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 2016. WOMEX 2015 is scheduled for October 21-25 in Budapest, Hungary.
Santiago de Compostela hosted the successful 2014 edition of WOMEX. “We have made many friends there – and so did our delegates,” says Alexander Walter, WOMEX Director. “It feels great that the WOMEX path is crossing el Camino de Santiago again. An important feature of WOMEX is connecting with the host region in a lasting way and bringing its culture and its professionals to other regions all over the world.”
Víctor Bello of local hosts Nordesía added: “After the great experience in 2014, we are so happy to welcome all WOMEXicans to Santiago again in 2016 with the aim of making Santiago the capital of music diversity. We will enjoy the lively city as well as learn together and share knowledge. We will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nordesía. Don’t miss it!”
The bid to host WOMEX 2016 in Santiago de Compostela was headed by event organization Nordesía; with the support of the city of Santiago de Compostela through INCOLSA; and the Xunta de Galicia (the government of the region) through AGADIC, along with the Foundation of the City of Culture.
The Cidade da Cultura will once more play host to a busy Trade Fair, in-depth Conference Sessions on hot topics, compelling Films, Daycases and more, with the Nighttime Showcases spread throughout the scenic Old Town including a stage next to the famous Cathedral.
Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the Galician region located in Spain on the Iberian Peninsula. Lying at nearly the most Westernmost point of Europe, Santiago has been the journey’s end for millions of devout pilgrims and adventurers through the Camino de Santiago (“Way of St. James”) since the 9th century and is declared a UNESCO World Heritage city. Santiago de Compostela has been a place of cultural exchange since the Middle Ages and is renowned for its green hills and wild coastline splashed by the Atlantic Ocean; its ancient traditions, extraordinary cuisine and music.
