The WOMAD UK festival announced some of the names that will headline the 2013 edition of the global music gathering. WOMAD UK is set to take place 25-28 July.
The headliners include Gilberto Gil, Rokia Traoré, Alice Russell and David Rodigan MBE. Gilberto Gil is an essential figure of Brazil’s Tropicália movement in the late 1960s when his songs of protest and dissent were aimed squarely at the military junta then controlling the country.
Malian vocalist Rokia Traoré sings about the plight of women worldwide and also laments the sad state of affairs experienced by her Malian homeland.
While South America and Africa are always well represented on the WOMAD bill, the UK talent is never ignored. British artists include Brighton soul singer Alice Russell and reggae artist David Rodigan MBE.
