Saharawi Singer Aziza Brahim Wins Spanish Film Award

Aziza Brahim, one of the leading vocalists from the Western Sahara has received a Biznaga de Plata award for Best Original Soundtrack for the movie “Wilaya” at the 15th Festival de Cine Español de Málaga. Aziza Brahim also made her debut as an actress in the film.

The Saharawi singer recently performed at the Festival Tránsitos in Tenerife (Canary Islands), and she will continue her Spanish tour to promote her new album Mabruk.

Aziza is from the Western Sahara and her family lived in exile before she was born as her mother fled from Moroccan incursions into her homeland. Morocco now controls the Western Sahara and its people have been split between those who fled and those who remained. Aziza grew up in the Saharawi Refugee camps in southern Algeria but is now based in Leon, Spain with her band Gulili Mankoo.
