Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brooks
Star Rise (Real World)
This CD of remixes is a compilation of UK-based Asian musicians celebrating the work of qawwali great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He unfortunately passed away just as the record was being completed. The 9 tracks draw on two CDs recorded on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label – Mustt Mustt and Night Song (with Michael Brook).
Our two favorite picks include the Black Star Liner remix of My Comfort Remains, and State of Bengal’s remix of Shadow. Other remixes are recorded by Nitin Sawhney, Dhol Foundation, Talvin Singh and Asian Dub Foundation.
Purists may prefer the original tracks, but this is a great work of music nonetheless, with over an hour of sublime vocals blended with trip-hop beats and drum-and-bass tracks.
