Magical Time at the Night of Fairies

Daemonia Nymphe Live at la Nuit des Fées (Prikosnovenie, 2010)

I’ve always associated the world of fantasy literature and art with progressive rock. However, world music also has strong connections as represented in this DVD. French record label Prikosnovenie specializes in fairy music. That is the music that celebrates the magical creatures found in European literature and folklore. Every year, Prikosnovenie pus together a music festival called Night of Fairies (La nuit des fées) in Clisson (France) and they invite musicians who have connections with the worlds of fantasy.

The DVD Daemonia Nymphe Live at la Nuit des Fées showcases the magical and shamanistic music of Greek band Daemonia Nymphe. The musicians celebrate Greek mythology, the world of nymphs, satyrs, Bacchus and other characters. They dress in togas, wear masks and play ancient musicals instruments such as lyra, varvitos, krotala, pandura and double flute. Band members include Spyros Giasafaki, Evi Stergiou, Maria Stergiou, Christos Koukaras, Daphne Kotsiani, and Vangelis Paschalidis.

The DVD also includes Italian folk band Corde Oblique and the wild music and vocal wizardry of sensational Bulgarian singer and fiddler Djaima.

Daemonia Nymphe Live at la Nuit des Fées is a fascinating portrait of the music that takes you to the mysterious worlds in the realm of fantasy.
