Essential Scratch Perry

Lee “Scratch” Perry – Chicken Scratch (Heartbeat, 2007 reissue)

Heartbeat Records has releases of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s  Chicken Scratch in a Deluxe Edition CD. The vintage recording was remastered and  features the now classic pre-reggae sound, combining brass-led ska and 1960s soul. The CD takes the listener back to the influential Studio One era. Several bonus tracks have been added to the original release.

Although Lee “Scratch” Perry is known as one of the precursors of dub in the 1970s, Chicken Scratch goes back even farther, to a time where Jamaican musicians were cooking a musical style that became huge in the 1970s: reggae.

The CD includes liner notes written by David Katz, author of People Funny Bay: The Genius of Lee “Scratch” Perry and Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae .
