Flautist Jorge Mochales of Celtic Band Brenga Astur Dies at 29

Jorge Mochales López died March 6th, 2007, of a heart attack. He was 29. Mochales was a well known figure in Spanish Celtic music. He was a member of Asturian band Brenga Astur.

Jorge Mochales was born in San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid) and was married to Marta Elola, Brenga Astur’s vocalist.

Even though he had a degree in Psychology, he was more interested in Asturian folk music and ethnography. He played tin whistles, low whistles and mandolin, background vocals. Before joining Brenga Astur he performed with folk bands such as Dagda and Keol.

Together with his wife, Marta Elola, he was developing the Museo Etnográfico del Oriente Asturiano (Eastern Asturias Ethnographic Musuem). The couple was also working on a book about the history of the ancient mills in the Llanes area.

Jorge Mochales is survived by his wife and a baby son.
