VIBE.com Honors the Late, Great James Brown

New York (NY), USA – VIBE.com will be honoring James Brown all week with photo, audio and video tributes to his incredible career.

“James Brown is an American original. A king of soul and rock ‘n’ roll, Brown is one of the most influential musical artists of the last fifty years, and perhaps the most sampled artist in hip hop history,” said VIBE Editor-in-Chief Danyel Smith. “At VIBE we are saddened by his death, but take comfort in his amazing, relentless legacy.”

In honor of the so-called “hardest working man in show business,” VIBE.com has created a special James Brown playlist, including the Godfather’s hits “Livin’ In America,” “It’s a Man’s, Man’s World,” “Get Up Offa That Thing,” “Hot Pants,” “Super Bad,” “Cold Sweat,” “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “The Boss,” “Say It Loud (I’m Black and I’m Proud), and, “The Payback.”VIBE.com also is featuring a James Brown Slideshow and a James Brown Video Tribute site — featuring classic James Brown performances from the Ed Sullivan Show, with Aretha Franklin, and many more.

“I am hurt. That’s my godfather, my soul inspiration, the hardest working man in show business of all time. He’ll be missed, but his music and his legacy will live on through me, in every way you can imagine,” said Snoop Dogg.

“An American original, his fans came from all walks of life and backgrounds. James Brown’s family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers this Christmas,” said President Bush.

Brown won a Grammy for lifetime achievement in 1992, as well as Grammys in 1965 (“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag ” (best R&B recording)) and 1987 “Living in America” (best R&B vocal performance, male.)) His appearance as a crazed preacher in the comedy classic, The Blues Brothers, is widely recalled as a cinematic tour de force.

Memorial plans are, as yet, incomplete. Brown is survived by his fourth wife, Tomi Raye Hynie, and four children — two daughters and sons Daryl and James Brown III. James Brown was 73 years old.
