Compiled and edited by Donald Cohen.

The interest in fado music outside of Portugal has grown considerably in past years thanks to influential artists like Mariza, Cristina Branco, Misia and others. With the growing interest, new compilations and books are coming out to shed light on the passionate Portuguese style.

Fado Portugues, Songs from the Soul of Portugal is not a historical account of fado music, but rather a collection of some of fado’s most famous songs, accompanied by fascinating vintage photography.

The book begins with a brief historical introduction, followed by the sheet music and lyrics of popular songs, a total of twenty-six songs in melody line arrangements for voice and guitar, with chord boxes and full lyrics in both Portuguese and English.

Every song comes with a historical overview that includes the name of the composer and the history of the song.

The author ends the book with a listing of fado houses in Lisbon, a bibliography and the track listing of the CD that accompanies the book. All the artists featured are fado classics, including the great fado diva Amalia Rodrigues.
