Panamericana
draws its inspiration from all across the Americas, and plays like a
dreamy soundtrack where cha-cha-cha’s and boleros mix with classical harmonies
and cowboy music.

The Brooklyn-based retro collective plays mostly Latin American music such
as boleros, cha-cha-cha, cumbias and huaynos as well as some lieder, and cowboy
songs. Fronted by classically trained singers Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst, the
band mixes musicians from the US, France and Colombia who all look back to the
Latin motherland most of them never had. Some of the songs found on

Panamericana
have been heard the world over, while some are known
solely within their national or regional borders, and others have hardly ever
been heard at all. They include “Volver, Volver,” a Mexican ranchera anthem of
sorts; the Peruvian Huayno “Corazón, Corazón,” heard by chance in a small
mountain town in Peru during one of the Rubias’ South American travels.

Other songs include “Despedida,” a Venezuelan pasaje written
and recorded by Venezuelan composer Simón Diaz; “Cada Domingo…” and “Ay
Raquel,” two great examples of Vals Criollos, a music seldom heard outside of
Peru, “Le Temps de l’Amour,” an early hit for French Yéyé star Francoise Hardy,
who probably never imagined that it would some day be re-interpreted as a
Dominican-tinged number, and “Blue Prairie,” one of the Sons of the Pioneers
Cowboy classic.

Panamericana
was recorded by Andy Taub (Calexico, Marc Ribot), mixed by Mark Plati (David
Bowie, Brazilian Girls) and features a stellar cast of guest musicians including
keyboardist Anthony Coleman (Marc Ribot’s Cubanos Postizos), Vibraphonist Matt
Moran, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, accordionist Josh Camp (One Ring Zero) and
Gypsy Swing guitarist Stephane Wrembel (David Grisman, Mark O’Connor). Band
members also include Olivier Conan – Cuatro & vocals; Taylor Bergren-Chrisman –
Bass; Timothy Quigley – Percsussion; Greg Stare – percussion & Giancarlo Vulcano
– Guitar.
