What's a mailing list or a List Serve?
List Serve (or LISTSERV) is essentially a mailing list service that often runs on IBM mainframes or UNIX servers. It is a program that handles mailing lists, taking in information from people on the mailing list and distributing it to all members of the group. LISTSERV can handle many different mailing lists, which each has a different name to distinguish them. Internet mailing lists are in most cases communities of people sitting around discussing one of their favorite topics by e-mail.

Overview
The Folk Alliance has set up a world music list-serve for our members and for world music industry professionals. This is a list of world music industry people from record labels, festival programmers, booking agents, artists, promoters, press, radio, retailers and distributors who all have a passion and definitely a professional interest in the activities, ideas, projects, and developments within the world music industry. We hope that this forum provides the same year-round sense of community that our conferences create.

Net etiquette
1. Remember that the whole list reads your post. Micro communication leads to annoyingly trivial email traffic. Don't send email that says, "Yeah, me too", or "I'm for that"or "See you at ten".
2. When a subject becomes of interest to a few, go there, with the few. It is OK to email messages privately to members of your group. In fact it is often better.
3. Subject line. Having a correct, or corrected, subject line is a helpful way to keep readers of your message informed about what they are opening up. If you reply to a message and change the subject, change the subject line. And be specific (and amusing) with your subject line.
4. Quoting. It is always / often handy to quote from a previous message. However, if you edit the past message into a concise "quote" it is easier for the reader to appreciate your point. Don't leave the entire text of the past message in your reply, at the head nor tail.
5. ALL CAPS. This is an old obvious piece of netiquette, all caps = shouting.
6. No flaming. While we're on to long established Internet behavior, there's the flame. This is the term introduced to the Internet that identifies the angry email sender. Stay away from rapid-fire responses. While sometimes the most impulsive thoughts can be inspirational, they can also be hasty and provocative. It's often best to let things sit for a bit before reacting. Last Updated 10/15/2006 06:25PM; 7,532 Hits |
