A popular music genre developed in the United States of America and the UK in the late 1960s. Its main influences were 1950s rock and roll, soul music and blues. As the genre grew, further influences were added, such as jazz, folk, country and classical music.

Rock spawned numerous subgenres: hard rock, southern rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, punk rock, grunge, etc.
