Photo courtesy of BMG Brazil All-round talent Chico Buarque feels at home in a vast variety of settings: not only as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, but also as a poet and writer of novels and theater plays, and even as a forward on a soccer pitch. Although he never considered himself a protest singer, he was one of the heroes of the democratic movement during the years of the oppressive Brazilian military regime. Like his contemporaries Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, Chico was forced to leave Brazil and lived in exile in Italy for two years. After his return to Brazil, the quiet and shy artist tried (and often enough succeeded in doing so) to trick the still existing board of censors with encoded lyrics or by publishing his songs under a pseudonym. This attitude brought him the love and respect of the Brazilian intellectuals as well as the ordinary people.
Up to these days, each of Chico Buarque's albums is eagerly awaited, even more the rare live recordings of this singer who doesn't like to be in the limelight. The enthusiasm that Chico Ao Vivo generated did not come by chance. This double-CD is only the fourth live album Chico made over the 35 years of his career. The Brazilian concerts, in which Chico presented the repertoire of his studio album As Cidades plus some of his classics, attracted more than 150.000 of his fans. "Chico Ao Vivo" is the rare and complete document of a show Chico did at The Palace in São Paulo. And it's certainly the best present he could have given to his countless fans all over the world that celebrated his 35th anniversary as a professional musician. |
