Haale?s explosive music is a blend of the old and the new. ?I use a lot of Rumi?s lines?they?re incredibly rhythmic and beautiful--and some contemporary Persian poetry, and collage it together,? she said. ?I take the old and new?a reflection of my life?a collage.? Further enhancing her cross-cultural sound, is the lilting, mystical sound she produces on the traditional Persian instrument, the setar, and the electrifying explosion generating from her guitar. The young vocalist hit the music scene in 1997 at the Horde tour where she opened for Neil Young. In 2001, her full-length debut, The Wide-Eyed Seamstress received a warm reception and was charted on CMJ radio stations across the country. That same year, she received recognition from the Academy of American Poets and the Goodman Grant for Poetry. Haale?s distinct sound has caught the attention of many in the music community. Global Rhythm magazine named her ?Best Unsigned Artist of the Year, 2003? and also voted her ?one of the 15 world music artists sure to make big waves in the future.? And in a critique of her music, New York Times music critic said, ?Haale underscores the evolution and transformation of centuries-old art forms as they adapt to the new realities of a multiethnic city.? |
