Amjad Ali Khan
Extraordinary New Dehli sarod player Amjad Ali Khan has established a reputation as one of the living legends of Indian classical instrumental music and is the sixth in an uninterrupted lineage of masters of the sarod.
In a career spanning over 50 years, Amjad Ali Khan has single-handedly elevated the sarod to one of the most popular instruments in the Northern Indian tradition. Taught by his father, the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan, he is the sixth in an uninterrupted lineage of music masters known as the Senia Bangash School of music.
Khan has toured extensively throughout the world, establishing a reputation as one of the living legends of Indian classical instrumental music and as one of its most prominent exponents on the international concert circuit.
An admirer of European classical music, Khan long harbored a desire to fuse the magnificence of the Western orchestra with the traditions of the raga. His dream came true in 2010 when he recorded Samaagam at the historic Greyfriars Kirk church in Edinburgh in March 2010 joined by the the Laboratory Music Project of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
His two sons and disciples Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash usually join him on stage.
