Muruga has been playing world music since he was a child. At the age of 6 he started taking accordion lessons from a Russian Gypsy named Misha Bischof. At the age of 13 he switched to drums and by 1959 was playing with Mat Gouze and The Round the World Review.

Muruga continued to play music and had a diverse career as a drummer and drum soloist throughout the 1960's. In 1973 Muruga recorded with Weather Report on the album "Sweet Nighter" and he did sessions with George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars throughout the 80's. In the 90's Muruga released a series of trance drumming records with Prem Das and also recorded "Blues from the Rainforest" with Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia and collaborated with Baba Olatunji on Cosmic Rhythm Vibrations.

Currently Muruga has his own band Muruga & The Global Village Ceremonial Band and continues to do session work as well as giving drum and mediation workshops.
