Founded by Aaron Luis Levinson in 2000, and directed by Oscar Hern?ndez, the 13-14 member Spanish Harlem Orchestra covers classic Latin music as well as introducing original music. In addition to being pianist, arranger and musical director for the international superstar Ruben Blades, Oscar Hernandez has recorded and performed with Latin music giants Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias, Juan Luis Guerra, Oscar De?leon, Willie Col?n, and many others. Oscar Hernandez was also the musical director for Paul Simon?s Broadway show, ?The Capeman.?The Spanish Harlem Orchestra's first CD, released in 2002, garnered the best New Artist Award at the 2003 Billboard Latin Music Awards and was nominated for a Grammy in 2002 for Best Salsa Album of the Year. Their CD Un Gran Dia En El Barrio won the 2003 Billboard Latin Award for Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year, New Artist. It celebrates the music and history of the legendary Puerto Rican neighborhood of New York City.
On its second CD, Across 110th Street, the band features salsa legend Rub?n Blades. The album won a Grammy in 2005. Spanish Harlem occupies the lower southeastern corner of Harlem, which is generally known as a mecca for African-American music. El Barrio, as it is called within the community, has been the birthplace for salsa, Latin soul, boogaloo and countless other variants of tropical Latin music, and it has influenced the popular music of such artists as Carlos Santana, Tito Puente and Marc Anthony. |
