Biography:

Indian Music has evolved from traditional folk cultures. It is those basic rustic notes that have found expression in the intricately designed structures of Hindustani and Caratic classical music. While Indian classical music has a large following among connoisseurs, the general public responds to slightly lighter versions which are technically easier to understand as well as more colloquial in content. Thus an entire light music tradition has taken shape which draws its fundamental inspiration from ancient, devotional music. The popularity of this lighter tradition is markedly greater and this music also experiments with various aspects of fusion with other traditions.

Radhika V. Ramani is a young and versatile exponent from this tradition. Though formally tutored in both the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions under the watchful eyes of acclaimed musicians, she has carved a niche of her own with her unique brand and style of improvisation.

Born into a family of classical musicians, Radhika had her first singing lessons as early as the age of four from her accomplished grandmother, the late Smt. K. Rajam. Later she continued Carnatic training under her uncle, Shri Seshasai, and Guru, Smt. Rajee Narayan. Training in the Hindustani tradition still continues under Shri Shrikant Waikar of the Gwalior Gharana. She has imbibed tenets of the light music tradition from Shri Raman Shankar and regularly performs in duet with him. It has been her privilege to receive training in Bhavgeets and Abhangs from Guru Mohan Rao Pai, a versatile composer in Maharashtra.

Radhika can fluently sing devotional light music compositions in a variety of languages including Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit. As a regular performing artist for TV and radio stations in Mumbai (Bombay), she is eloquent in rendering bhajans, ghazals, film based tunes and ragas.

Still in her early twenties, Radhika has several prestigious concerts and recordings to her credit. She regularly performs at various youth festivals across the Indian sub-continent and has recently begun to take her career beyond India's borders. While equally articulate in both Hindustani and Carnatic classical vocal technique, she excels at the sweetly devotional bhajans in both north and south Indian styles.
