The music of Gokh-bi System is based in part on the ancient tradition of troubadour storytellers called jelis, and in part, on the politically savvy, uniquely Sengalese rap traditions. These young players are part of a new wave of musicians and singers who are reclaiming the African roots of rap and hip-hop, to create a globally aware, five-language look at contemporary life in Senegal and the world. They blend the sound of the beautiful three-stringed ekonting of southern Senegal, with delicate words and soulful vocals, and then add their unique multi-language rhythm poetry to the mix. Gokh-bi System includes members of three different ethnic groups - the Jola, the Serer, and the Wolof peoples, so they know all about the practical challenges of multiculturalism. Their songs address issues from personal love and loss to more community-oriented issues of race, global politics and positive self-image. Even the group's name, Gokh-bi System (which means "Neighborhood System"), tells you something about their sense of responsibility to their community and their understanding of the importance of international cross cultural connections. They have been touring with Tony Vacca, Massamba Diop, and World Rhythms since December, 1999, as part of the Senegal-America Project, presenting diversity workshops and performances in schools and concert halls. |
