Marseilles Band Lo Còr de la Plana Bring Ancient Occitan Polyphonic and Percussive Traditions to Toronto

The Small World Music Festival presents the nomad troupe from Marseilles, Lo Còr de la Plana who will perform their innovative vocal and percussive gymnastics influenced by ancient Occitan polyphonic traditions. The concert will take place Sunday September 28 at 8:30 pm at Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas Street West.
 
 Lo Còr de la Plana (pronounced "loo quar de la plan") is a Marseilles' choir from the quarter "La Plaine," made up of six feverish singers, accompanied by percussion, namely bendirs and tamburello, handclapping and foot-stomping.

Founded in 2001, this group combines contemporary inspirations from their multicultural home city with the ancient Occitan polyphonic vocal traditions. They are nomads who perform just about everywhere and take their music to the people -- in churches, factories, bars or theatres. The group's influences run the gamut from Bartok to the Massilia Sound System, from Oran to Le Rove. Their performances are engaging and unique as they recreate an astonishing range of sounds that make the show feel as if it is taking place right in their neighborhood -- police sirens, newborn children, the cries of debauchery at a party, howling wolves and bleating sheep.
