CD ReviewsEl Lebrijano

Cuando Lebrijano Canta Se Moja El Agua (Rosevil, 2008)

Juan Peña "El Lebrijano" is a living legend among Flamenco singers. Even though he performs the most traditional and difficult flamenco genres, he is also one of the most adventurous singers in the current Flamenco scene. El Lebrijano enjoys musical explorations, where his prodigious and commanding vocals are accompanied by unconventional musical arrangements. In the past e has collaborated with Middle Eastern and north African musicians on albums such as Casablanca and Encuentro.

On his latest CD, Cuando Lebrijano canta se moja el agua, El Lebrijano pays tribute to literary master Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Some time ago, Gabriel Garcia Márquez said that "When Lebrijano sings, water gets wet." El Lebrijano was so honored with the comment that, during that same day, he decided to return the favor. The result is Cuando Lebrijano canta se moja el agua, which features sections of Gabriel Garcia Márquez's writing turned into songs.

This is one of  El Lebrijano's finest works. His passionate vocals are accompanied by Flamenco, classical and jazz elements. The producers are Pedro Maria and David Peña Dorantes, who introduce guitar, piano, a chamber music string ensemble and abundant percussion.

A true gem of cutting edge Flamenco.
