Dobet Gnahore, Star of Acoustic Africa, to Return to the Wisconsin Union Theater

Events

Dobet Gnahore returns to the Wisconsin Union Theater on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 8:00 pm. Born, in Ivory Coast, Gnahore is a natural star and a triple threat. She dances, plays percussion, and sings in French and seven African languages. Gnahore stole the show in the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Acoustic Africa show in 2006 (when she performed with Habib Koite and Vusi Mahlasela), and stole hearts again at the Madison World Music Festival at Willy Street Fair in 2007.

Gnahore’s music echoes her homeland, with influences of Cameroonian, Congolese and East African sounds. Her lyrics are often socially conscious and touch close to home for many people. Gnahore sings about subjects such as the AIDS pandemic, the importance of family, and remembering your roots.

This concert is sponsored by the Wisconsin Union Directorate. Support is also given by the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Wisconsin Union Theater Endowment Fund and ETC. Media sponsors are The Onion, WSUM, WORT and Wisconsin Public Radio’s Higher Ground.

Tickets are $28, for the general public, $26 for WAA members, Union members, UW faculty and staff, and non-UW students. As always, UW-Students are only $10! Tickets can be purchased by phone (608-265-ARTS)), by fax (608-265-5084), by mail or in person at the box office (Wisconsin Union Theater, 800 Langdon St., Madison, WI 53706), or online at http://uniontheater.wisc.edu.
