Ceylonese Musician Des Kelly entertains in Melbourne Australia
Des Kelly, the pioneering Ceylonese musician and lyricist, is
back in the spotlight, in his adopted home in Melbourne, Australia. Kelly, who
was born in Colombo in 1936, reached the dizzy heights of fame when Radio
Ceylon, the oldest and finest radio station in South Asia provided him with a
platform for his songs.
Radio Ceylon made him into a household name - popular announcers Vernon Corea
and Christopher (Chris) Greet played his compositions on their music programs -
millions of listeners tuned into Radio Ceylon. The radio station in Sri Lanka
recently celebrated 80 years in broadcasting. He also received rave reviews in
the newspapers in Colombo and was also featured in the EMCEE Column of the
Ceylon Daily News in the 1960s. Kelly migrated to Australia in 1962 where he
made a name for himself as a versatile entertainer in Melbourne.
Desmond Kelly has appeared in many various acting roles in Australia, both as an
actor, on shows such as "Homicide & Hunter" for Crawford Productions and
as a solo entertainer on some of the top television shows in Australia, such as
"In Melbourne Tonight", the "Delo & Daly" show and Reg Lindsay's "Country
Hour" which was produced in Adelaide.
Kelly produced a string of hits in Ceylon and in Australia including 'Dream
World,' 'The Reason Being,' 'Cha Cha Baby' and a road safety song in Australia
titled, 'It's You.' Kelly has also recorded traditional 'baila' and calypso
music from Sri Lanka. He has recently collaborated on pop songs with Australian
entertainer Robin Foenander in Melbourne.
His songs are heard in many countries around the world and his "signature tune" Dream World was a hit in both Ceylon and India where it reached the top of the
Hit Parades in both countries.
Des Kelly has released three CDs including 'Lets Reminisce,' a CD
containing his early hits and compositions.
