Brazilian singer Nega Jaci released in Portugal her first solo album titled Canta Elis e Chico (Nega sings Elis and Chico). This new recording revisits iconic songs by Elis Regina and Chico Buarque, and many other classics from the Brazilian Songbook popularized by Rita Lee, Edu Lobo, Ivan Lins and Tom Jobim.

Born in Salvador, Bahia, Nega participated in the Bagunçaço Cultural Group (project focused on at risk children) as a teenager. Her talent for music was soon perceived and Jaci became lead singer of two bands, Sucata Mania and Percucia. With Percucia she recorded the CD “Toque Bahia”, featuring African roots music, a mix of Afro-Brazilian and American rhythms.

Jaci’s work as lead singer of two bands Jaci and her vocal range and her charisma caught the attention of celebrated Brazilian singer Margareth Menezes, who invited her to join their band. Se spent several years as a member of the band and recorded two albums: “Tete a Tete Margareth” and “Festival de Verão Salvador ao vivo”.

 

 

During one of her European tours, Nega fell in love with European culture. She sent a few years in London where she participated in various. While visiting Portugal, she was attracted by the Iberian nation and decided to stay around for a while. Nega Jaci recorded her first solo album in Portugal, revisiting popular Brazilian music (MPB) classics.
