Light (Six Degrees Records)

Indian electronic music outfit Midival Punditz returns with Light, an album where they present a mix of electronic music, Indian influences, heavy rock beats, cinematic passages and some pop hooks. Each track crosses into various territories with a trend towards repetition.

Some of the toe-tapping pieces will appeal to the electronic dance music community. At times the combinations are unexpected like track 2 where Midival Punditz mix a pop-rock beat with Indian vocals and a Jethro Tull-like flute.

Midival Punditz consists of the New Delhi-based duo of Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj. The duo indicates that the Indian influences on this album come folk music rather than Indian classical. The folk styles represented include sounds from Rajasthan, Punjab, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

This album was conceived as a live show, something like The Wall,” explains Raina. “It’s important that this album is played in its entirety.”

Light takes you through various moods, from dreamy Indian-inspired global electronica to arena rock beats and electronic dance music.
