Old Faith (Arc Music EUCD2492, 2014)

Lithuanian keyboardist, programmer and composer Linas Rimša explores the music and dances of the Russian ‘old believers.’ Also known as ‘old ritualists,’ the old believers separated after 1666 from the official Russian Orthodox Church to protest against church reforms introduced in the 1600s. The old Believers continue pre-reform liturgical practices.

Linas Rimša combines his keyboards and electronic beat programming with the fascinating voices of the Vilnius-based Russian folklore group Arinushka.

The music selection includes a mix of religious and spiritual hymns along with traditional songs and dances about the rye harvest, Carnival, love, and weddings that are still performed by Lithuanian Russians and southern Russians. The final result is a mesmerizing mix of world music with acoustic instruments and electronic trance music.

Highlights include the fast-paced rye harvest song ‘About Infelicity’ that features the female section of the choir along with frame drums; the hymn ‘About Prayer’ about the last days in life in which people pray for humility and mercy; and the fabulous trance piece ‘About Death,’ a transfixing spiritual song with ancient Russian chants, percussion and throat singing, about life after death.
