José Menese began singing at eight years old in his father’s shoe store and at parties. Although he had previously performed at La Puebla’s theatre and the Café Central, he made his official debut at Cine Carreteria in Osuna, where he was presented by Antonio Mairena.

He worked between 1963 and 1968 at the Zambra flamenco nightclub (tablao), along with Pericón de Cadiz, Perico el del Lunar, Rafael Romero, Juan Varea and Rosa Durán. He later participated in a short film made for German television, obtaining such success that prompted a tour throughout Spain.

Since then he has performed in major Spanish stages, including the Teatro Real (Royal Theatre), the National Auditorium in 1991 and 1992 along with Enrique de Melchor, in the music program at the Autonomous University with Enrique de Melchor and Juan Carmona ‘Habichuela, the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the Teatro Monumental in Madrid and international venues such as the Olympia Theatre in Paris.

He received the Award of Honor Tomás the Nitri at the National Flamenco Art Contest of Cordoba. He has also received, among other awards, the Calle de Alcalá and Patriarch of Cante.

Throughout his career, he has remained faithful to flamenco orthodoxy and has been praised by intellectuals, writers, poets and flamenco experts, who have not hesitated to highlight his well-rounded full voice, full of deep echoes.
