Global Fridays Music Series in Dearborn Announces Winter/Spring Season

The Arab American National Museum (AANM)’s Global Fridays 2015 Winter/Spring season will present music from Iraq, West Africa, China and India. The series is relocating from its longtime home in the Museum’s Lower Level Auditorium into The Annex, a new 4,700 sq.-ft. expansion adjacent to the AANM at 13620 Michigan Ave. Equipped with the latest in sound and projection systems and a moveable stage and seating, The Annex provides Global Fridays a flexible new home venue that can be reconfigured for specific purposes.

The Global Fridays Music Series program includes Iraqi maqam ensemble Safaafir. Their 5:30 p.m. workshop and 7:30 p.m. concert in the AANM’s Lower Level Auditorium on Friday, March 6, coincides with the opening of the new AANM exhibition Detroit to Baghdad: Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, on display through July 12, 2015. Global Fridays audiences are invited to the exhibition’s free opening reception, 5:30-7:00 p.m., that includes complimentary refreshments and a reading by renowned Iraqi American poet Dunya Mikhail.

West African guitar and dance rockers Tal National are set to perform on Friday, March 27 at The Annex.

The Global Fridays season at The Annex will also feature two acts representing diverse Asian musical traditions. Orchid Ensemble (April 17) delivers a mix of classical and contemporary Chinese sounds. The series concludes with South Indian Carnatic music concludes by Shantala Subramanyam with Avaneeswaram Vinu and Palghat Mahesh who will present “Divine Sounds of the Bamboo Flute” on May 1.

The Annex is adjacent to the Museum at 13620 Michigan Ave., just west of Schaefer Road in Dearborn. Free, lighted parking is available in the municipal lot north of the Museum.

Workshop + concert tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for AANM Members. Concert-only tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for AANM Members.
