On the Live at Lagny Jazz Festival CD and DVD set you can also experience the energy and dexterity of her band. Carmen Souza is joined by three outstanding instrumentalists, who are given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills with engaging solos and extraordinary interplay with Carmen Souza’s vocals.
The lineup on Live at Lagny Jazz Festival includes Carmen Souza on vocals and guitar; Theo Pascal on electric and acoustic bass; Ben Burrell on piano; and Elias Kacomanolis on drums and percussion.
Carmen Souza was born in Lisbon (Portugal) within a Cape Verdean family. She grew up in a mixed language background of Creole, the Cape Verde dialect her parents spoke at home, and Portuguese, always surrounded by the Cape Verdean way of life. Carmen Souza and her mentor, bass maestro Theo Pascal combine masterfully West African and Cape Verdean rhythms such as batuke, morna, and cola djon, with contemporary jazz influences.
After successful dates in Europe, Carmen Souza is currently touring North America, promoting the new album.
