Musicport World Music Festival Announces 2013 Program

This year’s Musicport Festival will be held October 18th – 20th, 2013. Musicport is a world music festival that takes place in the scenic seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. Musicport will feature over 50 acts in one indoor venue and over 5 stages. Musicians scheduled for this year’s event come from Tuva, Denmark, Peru, Zimbabwe, Bosnia, USA, Tanzania, Mali, Iran and Egypt. The festival also includes a UK debut from Turkish band Arifa.

Neville Staple (The Specials & Fun Boy Three) and his band will headline on Friday night. Saharan blues band Tamikrest will be the highlight on Saturday, and the much-admired Bosnian singer Amira will finish the Sunday concerts, along with many hidden treasures throughout the wide-ranging and ambitious program.

Musicport was created in 2000 to promote live music and music education in Whitby and the surrounding area with its primary event being Musicport World Music Festival each autumn. Over the last thirteen years the festival has grown year on year and has established itself as a prestigious event in the festival calendar attracting major names such as The Buena Vista Social Club presents Cachaito Lopez, Toumani Diabate, Levellers, Misty In Roots, Courtney Pine, Talvin Singh, Rachid Taha, Richard Hawley, Hugh Masekela, Chumbawamba, Altan, Mory Kante, Osibisa, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and Los De Abajo.

In addition to the festival Musicport also runs a regular concert program and education workshops.
