Jim Matus and Doug Raneri
While Sleeping, Watch (Ancient Records, 2013)
While Sleeping, Watch is the first album collaboration between laoutar virtuoso Jim Matus and percussionist Doug Raneri. Jim Matus is well known in the Massachusetts area for his various world music and jazz bands and projects, including Paranoise, Mawwal and Impulse Ensemble. On this occasion he teams up with Doug Raneri, who plays a wide range of acoustic percussion instruments as well as electronic percussion.
The duo presents a fascinating set of jam-style pieces characterized by the creative serpentine melodies of the laoutar mixed with morphing hypnotic rhythms and sounds. The result is improvisatory and melodic at the same, with a global music essence.
While Sleeping, Watch is an engaging world fusion album by a duo of talented and passionate instrumentalists.
